Correlation of multiple sclerosis incidence in the UK 1990-2010 with geomagnetic disturbances

چکیده
We read with the great interest the recent article by Mackenzie et al. reporting incidence and prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the UK 1990-2010 (1). Beyond the various advantages of such descriptive studies about the epidemiology of MS, the most important and useful aspect of this study, in our opinion, is determination of long-time MS incidence trend. However, MS epidemiology is studied frequently to find clues about possible environmental risk factors, longtime reports of its annual incidence for consecutive years are relatively rare. While, such incidence trend reports provide valuable opportunity to test the ability of risk factor hypothesis in describing the alterations of disease incidence, it seems that one of the causes of the rarity of such reports in publication may be the fact that often-cited hypotheses like vitamin D deficiency hypothesis and chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) cannot explain MS incidence trends.

Which Environmental Factor Is Correlated with Long-Term Multiple Sclerosis Incidence Trends: Ultraviolet B Radiation or Geomagnetic Disturbances?
Background Insufficient received ultraviolet B radiation (UV) is regarded as the main environmental risk factor (RF) for MS in vitamin D deficiency hypothesis. Nevertheless, geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) has also been proposed as a potential trigger for MS in GMD hypothesis. The aim of this study was to investigate which of these mentioned RF is correlated with long-term ultradecadal MS inciden...
متن کاملCorrelation of multiple sclerosis (MS) incidence trends with solar and geomagnetic indices: Time to revise the method of reporting MS epidemiological data
BACKGROUND Recently, we introduced solar related geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) as a potential environmental risk factor for multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of this study was to test probable correlation between solar activities and GMD with long-term variations of MS incidence. METHODS After a systematic review, we studied the association betwee n alterations in the solar wind velocity (VSW...
متن کاملIncidence and prevalence of multiple sclerosis in the UK 1990–2010: a descriptive study in the General Practice Research Database
OBJECTIVES To estimate the incidence and prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) by age and describe secular trends and geographic variations within the UK over the 20-year period between 1990 and 2010 and hence to provide updated information on the impact of MS throughout the UK. DESIGN A descriptive study. SETTING The study was carried out in the General Practice Research Database (GPRD), a...
متن کاملPrevalence and Incidence of Multiple Sclerosis in Fars Province, Southern Iran
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, which is accompanied by significant disabilities. Although there are some published data regarding the epidemiological features of MS in other parts of Iran, scarce data are available about the prevalence and demographic characteristics of MS in Fars province. The current study...
متن کاملDetermining the effect of sun exposure and physical activity on the incidence of primary progressive multiple sclerosis
Background: The onset of primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) can be triggered by sun exposure and physical activity. The present study aimed to determine the risk of sun exposure and physical activity in PPMS development. Methods: The case-control study recruited PPMS cases and healthy controls from the general population from September 2019 to September 2020 in Tehran, Iran. The sel...
